The effervescent tablet is a tablet which is very rapidly desintegrated in solution, when it comes into contact with water. A condition for formulating effervescent tablets is that the active ingredient must have a sufficient solubility in water to allow rapid dissolution before administration. An effervescent tablet always contains a mixture of sodium hydrogen carbonate and anhydrous citric acid. In contact with water, this mixture will generate carbon dioxide. This gas will then be responsible for the rapid disintegration of the tablet in water.
